いかに荒っぽい悪戯であろうと「洒落」の一言で済ませてしまう乱暴な談志を、唯一閉口させたのは石井伊吉（毒蝮三太夫）であった。駅のホームで電車を待っていた談志を電車入線間際に線路に突き落とそうとし、運良く落ちずに済んだ談志が「死んだらどうするんだ！」と怒鳴りつけたが、毒蝮笑って曰く「洒落のわからないやつだと言ってやる」。また、「笑点」の収録で大阪に行った際、道頓堀で暴漢に刃物で後頭部を切られた談志を見た毒蝮が「おい、貯金箱だな」と言って頭の傷口に硬貨を入れようとし一緒にいた笑点メンバーたちは大ウケしたという。石井に「毒蝮三太夫」の芸名を与えたのは談志である。
