薬物使用は通常、尿検査で調べる。覚せい剤使用後、尿内で確認できる期間について、薬物事件に詳しい小森栄弁護士は「個人差はあるが４８時間すなわち２日間で、摂取した覚せい剤の約８０～９０％は排せつされてしまう」と説明。１回の使用の場合、４日でほとんどが排せつされ、１週間から１０日が経過すれば尿検査で陽性反応が出る可能性はほぼないという。
毛髪には２週間以上残るとされる。しかし、毛髪をまとめて採取するのには身体検査令状が必要で、それには尿検査で陽性反応が出なければ令状は請求しづらい。酒井容疑者の安否も含め、捜査員が焦る理由はここにもある。
